The Provincial Forestry Service of West Kalimantan conducted a workshop on monitoring and controlling fire on peatland ecosystems on 7-8 February 2018 in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. The event aims to improve the capacity of the fire task force (Brigdalkarhutla) of the forest management unit (Kesatuan Pengelolaan Hutan – KPH) of Kubu Raya on how to manage forest and land fire related to peat ecosystems and water table management. The workshop, which was supported by GIZ, was opened by the Head of Provincial Forestry Service, whereas the keynote was delivered by the Director of forest and land fire control, Ministry of Environment and Forestry. In addition to the fire task force of KPH Kubu Raya, more officials and stakeholders related to forest and land fire management in West Kalimantan Province participated.

Resource persons of the event were officials from the Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG), namely Mr Hartono Prawiratmadja, Mr Budi Wardhana, Mr Alue Dohong. Additionally, resource persons from universities, such as Prof. Bambang Hero Saharjo (Bogor Agricultural University - IPB), Dr. Achmad Kurnain (University of Lambung Mangkurat, South Kalimantan), and Prof. Dr. Gusti Anshari (University of Tanjungpura, West Kalimantan) participated in the event.

As a follow-up of this event, the impact of the implementation of knowledge from the workshop will be evaluated. Also, the idea  to carry out similar workshops for other KPHs has been formulated.
