The Tarakan forest management unit (KPH Tarakan) is preparing a community-based ecotourism programme in its protection forest which will apply the “payment for environmental services concept”. The proposed ecotourism site is a reservoir, Embung Binalatung, which supplies clean water for the city of Tarakan in North Kalimantan. For the purpose of ecotourism development, the KPH Tarakan, supported by FORCLIME, conducted a study on detail engineering design (DED). The results of this study were presented by the consultant on 29 May 2020 using the MS Teams application. 15 participants joined the virtual meeting representing the Province Forestry Service, KPH Tarakan and FORCLIME.

The DED provides cost estimation with the specification of the designed items, as well as the estimation work schedule. Based on the study, KPH Tarakan will prepare a proposal for the provincial government and relevant parties to develop a payment for environmental services programme, called: “Green Slipi Ecotourism Embung Binalatung".

Following up from the meeting, the consultant will finalize the DED study report based on inputs collected during the event. Afterwards, the KPH Tarakan will arrange a meeting with relevant parties to develop a public-private partnership on ecotourism business development.

A good Forest management plan is essential for a forest management unit (KPH) to successfully manage its forest operations. Therefore, it needs to be well prepared. With the purpose of preparing for the long-term forest management plan (RPHJP) of the KPH Malinau, the North Kalimantan Province Forestry Service and the technical unit of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (BPKH IV Samarinda), supported by FORCLIME, conducted a coaching session for the KPH Malinau on 29 May 2020 using the MS Teams application. “Despite the coronovirus pandemic , we hope that the RPHJP of KPH Malinau can be completed this year”, said Syafarudin, the Head of KPH Malinau.

During the coaching sesion, discussions were held on the socio-economic and biogeophysics data collected during two surveys in 2019. This data will be further analyzed to obtain KPH Malinau’s forest resource potential, which will be presented by KPH Malinau in its draft RPHJP. However, to finalize the document plan, the stakeholders need to physicaly meet at the BPKH IV office in Samarinda, East Kalimantan.

Land tenure and legality are key issues to achieve jurisdictional sustainability within the biosphere reserve area. Therefore, the Indonesia-German bilateral programme, Forests and Climate Change (FORCLIME) and Sustainable Agricultural Supply Chains (SASCI) conducted studies on the current status of land certification in the biosphere reserve, to identify existing bottlenecks, and potential ways for improvement. The studies were carried out in the Biosphere Reserves of Betung Kerihun Danau Sentarum (Kapuas Hulu-West Kalimantan) and Lore Lindu (Central Sulawesi) in 2019. For the purpose of sharing knowledge, FORCLIME organized a webinar to present the study results on 3 June 2020 via MS Teams application. Resource persons of the event were Rikardo Simarmata (natural resources law expert) who conducted the study in Kapuas Hulu, and Dahniar Andriani (customary law expert) who conducted the study in Central Sulawesi. 80 participants joined the webinar representing the Ministry of Environment and Forestry; local governments, NGOs, academics from West Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, North Kalimantan, Papua, also, other Indonesia-German bilateral programmes operating in East Kalimantan. Additionally, farmer groups from North Kalimantan were also invited to join the webinar. From the discussion session, participants gained knowledge and information on the current status and challenges related to land certification.
