The introduction of mammalian species to Tanah-Papua has become the focus of conservation concern. The increasing abundance of introduced species (e.g. Rusa deer) may have considerably affects on the native flora and fauna of the region. Therefore, from May to October in 2019 FORCLIME supported a field research study on Rusa management in Tambrauw, West Papua . The field study was designed to provide baseline data on population abundance and the current hunting practices. This information would be essential a for any informed future management decisions on the rusa population. The research is a collaboration between FORCLIME, the University of Göttingen Germany, and Cenderawasih and Papua Universities. Results of the field research were presented on a webinar on 7 October 2020 using the MS Teams application. The field research describes the distribution and population of Rusa in Tambrauw, hunting patterns and the importance of rusa to the local communities in terms of wildlife hunting and sustainability. More than 60 participants joined the webinar, with representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry at national and regional levels (Papua and West Papua provinces), relevant government agencies and universities in Papua and West Papua provinces.

Following the successful internships programme conducted in 2019, FORCLIME would like to continue the program for 2020. This year, five new graduates from Papua University and one student from Ottow Geissler University join the internship programme. Due to the current covid-19 pandemic, the internship will be done entirely online. Each intern will be assigned a mentor to facilitate and supervise their work during the internship. The internship will last for a period of two and a half months. The internship has already commenced with an Introduction Workshop held on 14 to 18 September 2020, this was also conducted online using MS Teams.

During the workshop, interns were given background information on a variety of topics. These included priority programs in the forestry sector, GIZ, FORCLIME and its thematic areas such social forestry, biodiversity conservation, forest management unit development and climate change mitigation in the forestry sector. In addition, interns also received insights from other GIZ programmes relating to corruption prevention in the forestry sector, peatland management, and sustainable agriculture supply chains.

After completing an internship programme at FORCLIME in October 2019, some students from Cenderawasih and Papua Universities were given the opportunity to conduct research in Tanah Papua (land of Papua). The results were presented in a webinar series. The first webinar was conducted on July 9th, the second was conducted on July 23rd, while the third webinar was on August 6th and presented on the following student research:

• “Plant Types for Making the Raw Materials and Natural Colors of the Noken (a traditional bag specifically produced in Papua) which is used by community in Kampong Rhepang Muaif, District Nimbokrang, Kabupaten Jayapura” by Ronauli Silitonga.
• “Identification of Pathogenic Disease and Fungus in Trees of Agathis labillardieri in Kampong Rimbajaya, District East Biak, Kabupaten Biak Numfor” by Martha Desriyanti Siregar.

The FORCLIME internship programme is part of a great effort to develop educational and work opportunities for Papuan and West Papuan students from Cenderawasih University and Papua University. They were assigned to several of FORCLIME’s pilot areas in order to learn from the FORCLIME team, while also working with partners at the field level.
